Best time to visit the Mekong Delta
The delta has two seasons, not four. The markets keep their own hours all year.
- Dec – Apr: The dry season. Warm, sunny and the most comfortable time.
- May – Aug: Hot and humid, with short afternoon rain. Peak season for tropical fruit.
- Sep – Nov: High water. The best season for Tra Su Cajuput Forest and Chau Doc.
- Floating markets trade all year, but only at dawn. Plan an overnight stay, not a day trip.

The delta is rarely a trip on its own. It fits neatly between Saigon and the islands, or before a flight north.
Mekong Delta: questions from the trade
A day trip from Ho Chi Minh City covers My Tho or Ben Tre. But one to two nights in Can Tho is what makes the trip. It is the only way to reach the Cai Rang floating market at dawn, when it is really trading and not putting on a show for tour boats.

December to April is the dry season and the most comfortable time. September to November is the high-water season. It is the best time for the Tra Su cajuput forest and Chau Doc, but some smaller canals run higher and muddier.
Yes. My Tho and Ben Tre are about 1.5 to 2 hours away by private vehicle and work well as a full-day trip. Can Tho and the Cai Rang floating market are about 3.5 hours away, so they need an overnight stay to do them properly.
It starts before sunrise and is busiest from about 5:30am to 7am. It winds down by mid-morning. This means a boat departure from Can Tho before dawn, which is why the overnight stay matters.
