Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand, closer to the Cambodian coast than to mainland Vietnam. The island is roughly 50km from end to end, and two thirds of it is national park and UNESCO biosphere reserve. The west coast has the sunsets and the east coast has the quietest white sand. Best time to visit Phu Quoc
On an island, the season matters more than anywhere else in Vietnam. It decides whether the boats sail.
- Nov – Apr: The dry season, with calm seas. The best time for island hopping and snorkelling.
- May – Aug: The southwest monsoon builds. Warm sea, heavier afternoon rain and lower rates.
- Sep – Oct: The wettest months, when boat trips are most often cancelled at short notice.
- Add a flexible land day to any green-season programme. Then a lost boat day is never a lost day.

Three to four nights is ideal. That is enough for a beach day, an An Thoi island-hopping trip and the Hon Thom cable car without rushing. Most agents use Phu Quoc as a relaxing end to a trip after Hanoi, Da Nang or Saigon, not as a trip on its own.
