Halong Bay, or Vịnh Hạ Long, means "bay of descending dragons". It is Vietnam’s most photographed landscape, with some 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rising from green water on the Gulf of Tonkin. It has been UNESCO-listed since 1994 and is roughly 2.5 hours from Hanoi by expressway.

Best time to visit Halong Bay

Cruises run all year, but the skies, seas and crowds change with the season. Use this quick guide to plan your clients’ trips.

  • Oct – Dec: Clear skies and calm seas. The best time for cruising and photography.
  • Jan – Mar: Cool, with misty mornings and fewer crowds.
  • Apr – Jun: Warm and green. Ideal for swimming around Lan Ha Bay.

Halong Bay: questions from the trade

It is about 165 km. Since the Hai Phong–Halong expressway opened, the private transfer takes roughly 2.5 hours. Day cruises and overnight cruises both fit easily into a northern Vietnam programme. A seaplane transfer is available as a scenic upgrade.

A day cruise suits tight schedules. The overnight cruise is the classic experience. Clients enjoy sunset over the karsts, dinner on board, kayaking and a calm dawn away from the day-trip crowds. One or two nights on board is our most-requested format.

October to April brings the clearest skies and calmest seas. Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant. July to August is warm, green and busy with domestic travellers. It is also the storm season, when we adjust sailings for safety.

They form one continuous seascape. Halong Bay is the classic and busiest area. Lan Ha, near Cat Ba, is quieter, with beaches and swimming. Bai Tu Long is the most peaceful. We plan each programme to match the client’s pace, budget and feelings about crowds.
