Ninh Binh: questions from the trade

About 95 km, or roughly 2 hours by private car. It is an easy day trip from Hanoi. A relaxed overnight stay allows a fuller programme with an early sampan ride.

Both are sampan rides through karst scenery and cave passages. Trang An is longer and quieter, with more cave tunnels, and it is UNESCO-listed. Tam Coc is shorter and livelier, and it is especially beautiful in the golden rice-harvest season.

May to early June brings golden ripening rice, the most photogenic time. October to April is cool and dry. Boat rides and the Mua Cave climb can be done all year.

Both work well. A day trip covers Trang An or Tam Coc, plus Hoa Lu. An overnight stay in an eco-lodge allows an early sampan ride, the Mua Cave sunrise climb and a slower pace.
